I got into MLG about a year ago, and didn't even start playing Halo 2 until about 2 years ago. One of my friends that got me into MLG, Mr. SniffelzZzZ, doesn't play anymore, but he'd probably be pro now if he still did. He taught me pretty much everything, and got me into it. My first event was MLG Charlotte. It was a GREAT experience. Met all the people I knew online, saw and met pros, and the atmosphere was great. If anyone is debating on whether going to an event or not, definitely do it. You will have a BLAST and it's something you don't want to miss.
